Devotional following “The high calling of the mature”

Please read the blog “The high calling of the mature” before this devotional, if you have time!

Luke 1: 64 – 66

‘And once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God. Fear came on those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judaea. And all who heard them kept them in mind, saying “What will then this child turn out to be? For the hand of the Lord will certainly with him.’

After John had been judged by God, his first thought and action was to praise the one he knew loved him so much. Even when Zechariah was being judged and punished by God, great things were happening to him and around him. He really made a difference. One reason that John was so successful in ministry, and that Elizabeth was such a comfort to Mary in time to difficulty, was because Zacharias was faithful in his service and relationship with God

Take time to look back over your last year. Perhaps you might want to make a couple of lists. One could be the good things that have happened, the great victories achieved. The other could be a list of things you think should have happened but for whatever reason didn’t.

Ask God to help you make a list of things as you look forward that you think he wants to do in this year coming. These can include personal aims and goals, family or relational aims and goals, ministerial aims and goals as well as professional ones.

Now look over them and cover them in prayer asking God to bring them to life. Ask him to help you eliminate those things that I’m not from Him, and breathe life into those things that are.

Prayer.

Lord, thank you for all the good things that have happened over this last year. Thank you that your grace was sufficient even in the times of defeat and failure. Lord, please help me look forward to the coming year with Your eyes. Fill me with your aims and goals. Help me to define a strategy to achieve them. Amen.
