Ephesians 4 v 11-16 “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

Unity in the Body  part 2

By Myles Tolley

Ephesians 4 v 11-16

“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

It is so important for us to realise daily how important it is for us to be unified together and the difference that it can make.  God has given us ALL unique personalities, gifts and talents which are given to fulfil His unique purpose and will for our lives that He meant for us.  As followers of Christ and members of the church, His body, this passage shows that we have a collective responsibility also – to equip and build each other up which will then lead to the church growing and leads to greater success to Gods plans.

In order for us to grow and succeed as individuals and as a church we must do it together.  With so many different personalities all grouped together it is inevitable that we will clash with others, ideas will differ and disagreements will occur and this is normal, but it’s how we deal with these things that is important.  Today’s verse shows that by building each other up, by using each other’s strengths to overcome each other’s weaknesses we will become mature in the Lord.  So rather than falling out over each other’s differences God wants us to use the talents and strengths He has given us to work together and overcome all the challenges we are faced with.  By doing things this way, Gods’ way, we will be protected and equipped to deal with the enemy’s tricks and trials, whether it be an attack on the church or the individuals within the church there will be support and strength within the body to overcome.

The enemy is very active and the church is a threat to his plans, as together we are stronger than when we are on our own, he wants to lie to us and divide us, he will attack us from within whether it be over fall outs, bickering, gossip and lies and if we fall for this it will damage us as individuals and damage the church, families and relationships.  When we are united we are a strong force for Gods work and can change the world!  The great news is God offers us protection and help against these evil schemes, if we pursue unity we will speak the truth and we will grow, so rather than fall out over differences and weaknesses we shall work together, fulfil our own part in the church using our individual giftings and talents and we will reach heights we never thought possible, achieve things miraculous and we all have a part to play.  It doesn’t matter what role or responsibility we have if we work together in unity and for God anything is possible, some of us may have amazing ideas yet there is a season for us all, it may not be time for our gifting just yet but instead of giving up we should support those whose season it is and not fall out, we must trust our leaders, mentors and pastors in these decisions and their advice and give everything to God.  In doing this and working together we will grow into the church God desires and move forward in leaps and bounds.
